Server Siren 1.1
Server Siren 1.1 has just been released!
The biggest change is a new feature which lets you be notified when a server comes back up as well as when it goes down. I’ve also updated the SMS Messaging and changed the dates so that they’re based on your nationality.
I’ve got some other cool features on the road map, but I wanted to get this out ASAP. Some people were having trouble with SMS messages.
You can download Server Siren here or get the new version by selecting Check for Updates in the Server Siren menu.

It would be nice if you can add ping mode so we can ping servers too,
and generate HTML page with time specified by user where can be automatically updated/stored directly on the local web server and we can check status via web.
And if the program crashes, it can restart itself
We need this very bad
PLEASE!!!

here is the complete list what we need PLEASE!!!!
There should be a simple ICMP-Check like a ‘ping’
* There should be a way to move items in the server list up and down
* There should be a way to group servers and services
* There should be a way to give the services a name
* Generate HTML page with time specified by user where can be automatically updated/stored directly on the local web server and we can check status via web.
* if the program crashes, it can restart itself

Good suggestions, Igor (though the double post is a little excessive
).
First, you _can_ give services a name. Simply click on the name, either in the Server table or on the details of the server itself to edit the name.
Second, what use would being able to order them serve? Not that it’s a bad suggestion, but the best way for me to understand what you mean is for you to tell me _why_ it’s useful.
Finally, do you mean if Server Siren crashes, it should restart? Not sure how I can make that work, but I’m more concerned with the crashing. Is Server Siren crashing on you? If so, please use the Contact page to report this so I can figure out why. A crash, to me, is a very serious bug and needs to be fixed ASAP.
Thanks!

ok, here is my thing
For the groups is like this:
I have bunch of servers that is accounting, another is barcoding, another is production and so on, so it would be nice to see my servers separated by the group.
But the biggest request is to be able to ping them and generate HTML page with the following structure: ( I have to choose the HDD location where to generate)
Status for 9/20/06 17:56:23 - this is the global date and time it was last checked/updated
status server name services info
——————————————————————————————
OK myhostname ping,www
OK 127.0.0.1 ssh, mail
DOWN 127.0.0.2 ping 9/20/06 17:56:23
(date and time when the services was down)
And if you can give ability to modify all fields fonts and colors on that page - customize HTML, like change OK font and color to blue or change DOWN font and color to red.
I even will pay little extra if you can do this.
I am using http://www.bitcom.ch/ Xnet software monitor but the company is no longer active I thing and theirs software is always crashing when something is down and its trying to wait and crashing, so i have to manually start this program from ssh.
that structure is from theirs html page and its very nice, I can send you that page example if you want.
please, only 2 things right now we badly need is that HTML page and the ping monitor.
thanks a lot in advance

take a look at this status page I was talking about:
http://www.bitcom.ch/gfx/products-xnet-example/index.html
and the program, if you can create same setup it would make me very happy
thanks

Igor: I think you’ll be pretty happy with the next update…

do you have any time frame?
November 5th, 2006 at 6:53 pm
Well, if I gave a date, I’d be wrong, so it’s better if I just said, “soon.”
Right now I’m working on some compatibility issues with Leopard (yes, some users are running Leopard). Once those are ironed out, it will be good to go.

Hi August,
currently trying to evaluate your application, but without any success. Tried many servers in our intranet and in the internet. Regardless what I try, I always get reachability NONE and response NONE. The log says “No network access. Did not check server”.
What am I doing wrong? The internet is access through a proxy which is correctly set in the system prefs. The intranet doesn’t require any proxy. Still the same.
Any clue? Any specific way to spell the host name? Would it for example be www.apple.com as a host name, and port 80 as the port? Since this is what I tried. And how would the correct host name be if an intranet URL is just “http://myserver” without any further domain. Is that supposed to work?
Would love to buy your app, but need to get it to work first.
Thanks for any hint
Manuel

Keep in mind that Server Siren monitiors *servers* not websites. In your case, that’s a very important distinction. A URL generally refers to a file, in most cases a file on a server. This, to put it another way, means a website.
A domain, on the other hand, points to a server, not a file on that server. In your case, you say you’re using ‘http://…’. The http:// part means you’re using a URL, not a straight domain. For example, try ‘apple.com’ instead of ‘http://apple.com.’ And if you want to monitor the webserver, you’d leave the port at 80 (the default).
If you have further questions, please feel free to contact me using the website contact page (http://FoggyNoggin.com/contact) and I’ll try to get you up and running.

great, I’ve to buy it… I would like it like other app, not a item menu, and bring to front with Cmd+tab

The price point is extremely enticing, and the GUI is very clean (refreshing after checking my nagios configs). Good work!
Here are a couple of suggestions I would make, if your looking to provide something for more of the enterprise customer:
More granular failure determination - 1 failed connection does not a crashed machine make. I don’t want to be notified every time there is a hiccup in the network. Too many false positives inevitably means people stop paying attention. Let me define how many sequential failures are necessary before a notification is sent.
Grouping - As iGor mentioned. I would like to group machines by location, or other variable that I define (timezone, server type, dept., etc).
Dependencies - Only if test_A is successful AND test_B fails, send notification (or any combination thereof). if I have 30 remote machines I am testing, and the testing machine loses it’s internet connection, I don’t suddenly want to receive 30+ notifications when the connection is restored. Oh, and 30+ MORE connections that the machines are back up.
Escalations - if a machine has been down for X minutes, the notifications change to 2nd level or backup people.
Ability to define html queries - I’m not nearly as concerned about whether a machine is listening for connections on port 80. What I AM concerned about is that if a request comes into port 80, can the webserver communicate to the back-end database and then supply the correct answer to the requesting host. Give me the ability to define soap/xml queries and what the expected answer should be.
Plug-in architecture - There may be a need for someone to check that specific Windows Services (as an example) are running. instead of trying to integrate all of this yourself, as perhaps you don’t want to get into windows programming, provide a mechanism for someone else to do it (this might even be useful for the custom scrupting I mentioned above).
I think Server Siren looks very promising. I will definitely be keeping on eye on this one!

All good suggestions Gumbee!
As I’ve mentioned, I am working on a new version of Server Siren. Some of these will be included, some won’t. At some point I simply need to say, “OK, this is enough for now, I’ll look at the rest later.”
The other thing is that I really want to keep Server Siren as clean and simple as possible. I think that is a big part of its success so far. Every feature that gets added adds another layer of complexity for the user. So I have to be very judicial about what I add.
That said, I take every suggestion seriously and spend WAY too much time evaluating each one. I’ll do the same with your list!
